Once the mask is released you can then adjust it. This will release the mask and bring you back to where you started: To remove the mask, select your subject and navigate to Object > Mask > Release. Or, in other words, it can easily be undone. One of the benefits of masking is that it’s non-destructive. If at any point you’d like to adjust the transparency levels of your opacity mask, you first have to release it from the subject. This will apply the rectangle as an opacity mask with Inkscape: How the subject looks with the mask applied. It is positioned op top of the subject.Īll you have to do now is select both the mask and the subject at the same time, then navigate Object > Mask > Set. Position your mask over the subject and make sure that it covers it completely: The mask is a rectangle with a linear gradient applied.

For this demonstration, I will be creating a rectangle with a linear gradient going from black to white. Now we need to create the object that will be used as a mask. It’s important to ensure that your objects are grouped together, otherwise the opacity mask will not work as intended. For this demonstration I will be applying it to a series of objects that have been grouped together: The opacity mask will be applied to this vector avatar. Switching between the two desktop managers doesn’t solve the problem, so the Unity Desktop Manager is not the culprit. To create an opacity mask with Inkscape we first need an object to apply it to. I’m on an I3 6, gig Ram running Ubuntu 14:04 and Xubuntu 14.04. It’s frustrating having to render a whole project just to add a watermark but that seems to be the only thing I can think of. Rebuilding the project from scratch is out of the question when this involves several hours work.Ī viable workaround, although time consuming and certainly not the best as far as final quality of the video, consists in exporting the project into a video file (such as an MP4) and then reingesting it in a new project in order to add the trasparent image (which happens to be nothing but a watermark). It doesn’t seem to be a problem on new small test projects, but I edited some large ones (larger than the one I am working on) without incurring in the problem. Not sure it may have to do with size of project, number of clips in it, filters etc. It looks like at some point a given project starts acting up and forgets about transparency. The problem doesn’t happen on all projects though as the very same image is displayed as trasparent on a new project but not on the one I am working - and where I need it. I tested images posted by users on this forum in similar topics, but same results.

Sometimes, transparent images are displayed with a black instead of transparent background. I’m pointing out what I believe could be a bug with transparency.
